The employment of surge protection is regulated by VDE standard 0100-443:2016-10. Accordingly, at least type 2 surge arresters must be used for protecting against indirect lightning strikes and switching overvoltages. If a system is equipped with external lightning protection or if protection is required in the event of direct lightning strikes, type 1 surge arresters must be used.
Charging modes 1 and 2 describe AC charging at a conventional grounded socket outlet or a single- or three-phase industrial socket outlet (CEE socket outlet). The surge protection must be installed in a sub-distribution box upstream of the relevant socket.
Charging mode 3 is intended for single- or three-phase AC charging and charging mode 4 for DC charging at permanently installed charging stations. In this case, the surge protection should be installed in the charging station to protect both the power supply and the data communication.
Citel provides solutions for all of these requirements. (mfo)
