ubitricity, manufacturer and operator of charging solutions for electric vehicles and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shell Group, has secured a public tender from the city of Berlin for at least 200 public lamp post charge points. The first lamp post chargers will be installed in the districts of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Marzahn-Hellersdorf and will use ubitricity’s “Heinz” charger, which was developed specifically for the German market.
The installation of the first 200 charge points will be coordinated in close cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action. The implementation takes place within the framework of a clean air project funded by the federal government. Should the project extension already applied for be approved, up to 800 additional lamp post charge points could be installed.
EV charging solution catering to the needs of urban EV drivers
With these lamp post chargers, ubitricity is bringing the successful model of on-street lamp post charging from London and other cities in the UK to Germany, with adaptions for local requirements. The lamp posts chargers will use the existing infrastructure and enable city dwellers without a private parking space (in Berlin and most other cities this accounts for around 60 per cent of drivers/residents) to charge their cars conveniently near their home.

The Heinz chargers, which were developed together with ebee Smart Technologies on Berlin’s EUREF campus, will be mounted on the column and therefore keep footpaths clear. With a charging output of 3.7 kilowatts, it offers optimal conditions for urban charging according to the resident’s usual parking times. ubitricity thus follows the everyday habits of drivers and allows many charging stations to be installed quickly and cost-effectively in residential areas, taking existing network capacities into account.
Ad-hoc charging without registration or membership
The selection of the locations is carried out in close coordination with Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action as well as with the districts and considers the local conditions of the individual districts. All lamp post charging points are supplied exclusively with electricity from renewable energies by Shell Energy Retail GmbH.

At ubitricity’s lamp post charge points, residents have the option of charging with their usual tariffs from a Mobility Service Provider (MSP), such as Shell Recharge, or ad-hoc using a mounted QR code. Ad-hoc charging works without registration or membership. For both variants, only a standard type 2 charging cable is required. (mfo)
