A new festival dedicated to the latest sustainable technologies has been staged alongside last weekend’s ABB Formula E race in Berlin, the world’s first all-electric motor-racing series. The Greentech Festival, co-founded by 2016 Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg, was the first of its kind and was run alongside the Berlin E-Prix at Tempelhof airport from May 23 to May 25. Up to 50,000 visitors were expected to attend the combined E-Prix and Greentech Festival to experience the latest developments and thinking in the fields of e-mobility, sustainability and a green economy. Rosberg, a green technology entrepreneur and investor in the Formula E Championship, explained how the existence of the E-Prix, now in its fifth year in Berlin, has provided the ideal platform for staging this complementary event.
“It’s a really exciting project because of the opportunities around the race to put on great speakers and awards, and concerts,” he said before the event. “It has all come together really well in Berlin and I think the ABB Formula E race is going to be super exciting there as well. There is so much happening, it’s going to be great.”
Platform to reach out to the next generation
Among the technologies featured were drone taxis, solar-powered shipping, virtual reality displays and biodegradable clothing, while the list of speakers for the festival’s Green Leaders Conference included Violeta Bulc, EU Commissioner for Transport, HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and Jean Todt, President of the motorsport governing body FIA. ABB had a strong presence at the festival with their own booth featuring a range of ABB technologies, including Free@Home products, a hologram showing ABB electric vehicle infrastructure and ABB Smarter Home solutions.
Martin Schiefer, head of ABB Marine & Ports in Germany, spoke at the Green Leaders Conference. His keynote address was on The Future of Seafaring. He said: “It’s very exciting that the Greentech Festival has been launched, as it represents a great opportunity for ABB to show the huge range of products and solutions that we can offer to help the global drive for a more sustainable future. We are delighted to support the festival and show our commitment to leadership in this field.”
Alejandro Agag, CEO and founder of Formula E, had added: “I am really looking forward to welcoming fans to the Greentech Festival at the race in Berlin. The FIA Formula E Championship offers a perfect platform to reach out to the next generation.” (mfo)
