One of the winning projects will be one of the world’s largest e-fuels facilities with an electrolyzer capacity of minimum 150MW. This next-generation facility will be situated near Padborg in Aabenraa municipality in the southern part of Denmark, close to European Energy’s e-methanol facility in Kassø which is currently under construction.
With the winning bid for an e-fuel facility in Padborg, European Energy now starts developing a facility that is three times larger than the existing Kassø facility in the southern part of Denmark leading the way towards larger projects that can satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for e-fuels.
Supply chain with biogenic CO2 and renewable energy sources
Additionally, European Energy won bids for two other projects. One being a second phase of the company’s green hydrogen project in Maade, close to Esbjerg, and the other being an expansion of the e-methanol facility in Kassø. This will add 9MW and 10MW of capacity to the projects for a total of 12 MW and 60 MW, respectively.

European Energy has created a supply chain using biogenic CO2 and renewable energy sources to forge an integrated e-fuel supply chain. With this tender, European Energy is set to scale their expertise and consolidate their position in the field, the company stated.

European Energy already plans to inaugurate the first of its large-scale commercial e-methanol facilities in 2024. The facility is in Kassø in the municipality of Aabenraa, and it will produce more than 32,000 metric tonnes annually. Several companies, including Maersk, Novo Nordisk, the LEGO group, and Circle K, have already partnered as offtakers for the e-methanol. (hcn)
