EGS GmbH, based in Gallin in the northeast of Germany, are the first to come up with a mobile solution for calibrating public chargers for electric vehicles. Using the mobile metre, local metrological authorities can calibrate already existing EV chargers in accordance with legal regulations. And they can do so even without using an EV, as was previously necessary. The device further allows manufacturers of charging stations to verify the compliance of their products. Calibrating AC chargers has been mandatory according to two laws: the German Verification Act (MessEG) and the Verification Ordinance (MessEV). There has been a grace period which will end on 1 April, 2019, by which date only chargers that have been calibrated and verified as conforming to the laws can be used. All public charging points already in use must therefore be verified with immediate effect for their measuring accuracy, insofar as they are used invoiced charging processes. The same applies to newly installed units.
For calibration authorities this involves a great deal of effort, which the mobile metring box can help to solve. In the usual process, the box is applied between the charger and the EV and measures the amount of charge that is transferred. This is then compared to the readout of the metre in the charging station. But this process does not necessarily require the connection of an EV, in which case the metre box rather than the car controls the charger. And this also benefits manufacturers of EV chargers, because for the first time they now have access to a legally conform system for precisely calibrating and assessing the conformity of their products in-house without having to go to external calibration authorities.
EGS uses the high-precision metre LZQJ-XC produced by their parent company EHM metering. Among other requirements (such as having a USB port to read out and process the charging profile) it conforms with the 0.2 S standard of precision demanded by the calibration authority. The casing also has a transparent window for reading off the calibration results. (mfo)
