Berlin memorial and documentation centre gets a solar roof

Berliner Stadtwerke has installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Topography of Terror Documentation Centre. The exhibition centre for the documentation and reappraisal of National Socialist terror in Germany and Europe will thus have 534 solar modules with a total output of 200 kilowatts.

This will produce almost 180 megawatt hours of electricity per year. Enough to cover 40 per cent of the company's own energy needs with green electricity. "With the photovoltaic system, we have taken an important step towards climate neutrality," says Andrea Riedle, Director of the Topography of Terror Documentation Centre Foundation.

Solar systems built on a lease model

As in other districts of the city, this system was also planned and built on a lease model. This means that Berliner Stadtwerke install, maintain and service the system, which is dimensioned in such a way that the maximum amount of electricity generated is also consumed in the respective building.

The roof is leased for a symbolic amount and the centre leases the photovoltaic system in return. Thanks to the savings in grid electricity, the commissioning and maintenance of the system is not associated with any additional costs for the memorial centre. (nhp/mfo)
