The freight centre of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) is located at Vienna South railway station. All goods trains arriving in the Austrian capital are unloaded here. Now, solar power system project developer Baywa r.e. has joined forces with its partner RWA Solar Solutions to build a photovoltaic system on the buildings of the Vienna South freight terminal. "Since 2018, ÖBB has been relying on 100 per cent green traction power and also supplies all buildings, facilities and container terminals entirely with 100 per cent green power," emphasises Johann Pluy, ÖBB's Chief Infrastructure Officer.
4,500 modules solar installed
A total of 4,500 solar modules were installed on an area of 10,000 square metres. These supply 2,200 megawatt hours of electricity every year. According to the project partners, this is currently ÖBB's largest rooftop installation. This was connected directly to the overhead line of the adjacent railway line and thus supplies traction current for the trains of the Austrian railway. "Following the successful implementation of a ground-mounted system in 2020, we have now completed our first rooftop project for ÖBB.

This supports the company in its climate goals and at the same time makes a valuable contribution to the expansion of renewable energies in Austria," says Stephan Auracher of Baywa r.e. Power Solutions. "Thanks to the new photovoltaic plant at the ÖBB Terminal Vienna South, which we realised together with the companies Baywa r.e. and RWA Solar Solutions, we can now further increase the share of self-produced sustainable energy," adds Johann Pluy.
Further power plants announced
But this will not be the last plant Baywa r.e. has built for ÖBB. "We are looking forward to implementing more exciting projects for ÖBB together with RWA Solar Solutions in the near future," says Stephan Auracher, already holding out the prospect. (su/mfo)
