Jordan based Philadelphia Solar and Ahmed Badawi Electromechanical Contracting company signed an agreement for a 4.6 MW solar carpark. It will be installed at the University of Jordan and is one of the five largest solar PV carpark projects in the world. It is supposed that the project will reduce the electric bill of the University of Jordan Hospital from the current consumption of 12.5 GWh/year significantly.
Solar-plus-storage competing with combined-cycle gas turbines in Jordan
Recently Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewable announced that solar-plus-storage is already competing with combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) in Jordan and Morocco. By 2023, the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for PV with batteries is forecast to decline to between $40 and $60 per megawatt hour, cheaper than CCGTs in other countries such as the United Arab Emirates. It is expected that a tender for the first project-financed storage system in the MENA region, in Jordan, will serve as a model for others.
“In the Middle East, solar-plus-storage in particular is becoming an increasingly attractive opportunity given the rising demand for dispatchable clean power and a low combined LCOE as well as the emergence of the first commercial and regulatory frameworks to make this happen,” Florian Mayr, Partner at Apricum, says.
