Solarworld delivers 20 MW solar modules to a project in Senegal, that will be installed by March 2017. A 30 MW PV plant will be installed by French based Optimum Tracker.

Solarworld AG is delivering solar modules with a capacity of 20 megawatts for a ground-mounted system in West African Senegal.

The 77,280 multicrystalline solar modules will be installed in the Kahone region, about 100 kilometers from the capital Dakar, by March 2017.

Project tendered by Senelec

The contract in Senegal was acquired by the Austrian Solarworld partner Energie Merl, which has been actively involved on the African continent for many years. The project was tendered by the Senegalese power company Senelec.

Increasing energy demand in the cities

The PV system is one of the largest in the country, which is characterized by rapid population growth. Frequent droughts have led to a rural exodus. As a result, energy demand in the cities is increasing rapidly. In light of the effects of climate change, including on the West African country, photovoltaics offer the key to sustainably transforming the energy supply.

French based Optimum Tracker is going to build the biggest PV plant in Senegal with 30 MW in Santhiou-Mékhé for Solairdirect, a subsidiary of the ENGIE group.(HCN)
