18 teams from eleven countries will take part in next year's Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE21). The student competition for innovative solar and sustainable buildings will take place in Wuppertal next summer. From a large number of applications, the jury has now made a pre-selection of the teams who will be able to present their projects and demonstrate that they can also meet the jury's demanding criteria in practice.
Managing the energy turnaround in cities
The teams will set up their buildings on the SDE21 campus next summer and then they will have to compete in ten disciplines. In addition to an architecturally appealing solution for urban spaces, the focus will be on energy efficiency, energy self-sufficiency, the use of sustainable building materials and other criteria for modern architecture. "In a century of urbanization and climate change, it is necessary to manage the energy turnaround in cities now," says Daniel Lorberg from the University of Wuppertal and project manager of SDE21, explaining the approach to focus primarily on buildings for urban spaces in this year's competition.

After the actual competition, the buildings will remain standing until the end of the summer. During this time, visitors to the campus will be able to find out more about the solutions that the students from the 18 teams have found. These come mainly from Europe. Germany is represented by six teams. Two more teams come from the Netherlands. In addition, one team each from Sweden, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Romania, Hungary and Spain made it to the final round. But Asia is also represented with two teams from Thailand and one team from Taiwan. (mfo)
