The sales figures for heat pumps have continued to rise in recent years. By the end of the third quarter of 2023, 295,500 heat pumps had already been sold in Germany. This exceeds the sales figures for 2022 as a whole, when 236,000 heat pumps were sold. Some energy suppliers are also already offering heat pumps to customers.

With the planned growth to a total of six million heat pumps in 2023, there is a lot of potential for energy suppliers to drive forward the heat transition, according to EUPD Research.
Bafa statistics show decline in subsidy applications
Nevertheless, reporting on the German heat pump market often seems contradictory, the analysts summarise. The figures for subsidy applications in the Bafa statistics show a significant decline: according to the application data, an average of 29,060 applications were submitted each month in 2022, compared to only around 7,845 per month in 2023.
This corresponds to a decline of 73 per cent. Added to this is the constantly changing and less transparent funding environment for end customers, as well as the current budget freeze, which is stopping applications from being accepted and approved.
Heat pump market fulfils projection
However, according to the EUPD, sales and the number of subsidy applications should be considered separately: The robust sales performance from quarter to quarter underlines the steady and ongoing demand for heat pumps. In addition, some buyers are financing their heat pumps without subsidies.

Based on the sales figures, it is clear that the German heat pump market is well on its way to exceeding the industry's projection of 350,000 heat pumps sold in 2023, which was made at the end of 2022. (nhp/mfo)
