2024 marked an outstanding year for renewable energy in Italy, especially for photovoltaics. According to Terna (the Italian electricity transmission system operator) data, in fact, in 2024 renewable production over the total net electricity production in the country increased by 44.2% compared to 2023.

Moreover, in 2024, renewable energy covered 41.2% of the national electricity demand: the highest share ever. Another record was set by photovoltaics, whose production in 2024 reached 36.1 TWh, representing a 19.3% increase over 2023 - and again, the highest result ever.

The positive results of renewable energy contributed to the increase in domestic electricity production, which grew by 2.7% compared to 2023. In addition, there was positive news about exported energy, which increased by an impressive 47.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, against a much smaller increase in imports (+2.4%).
Grid flexibility and stability
The positive results achieved by renewable energy in Italy, especially by photovoltaics, encourage to increasingly support not only renewable generation, but also the implementation of technological solutions that contribute to grid flexibility and stability, in order to ensure the efficient integration of renewable energy into the national energy system, Dorothée Krauss, CCE spokeswoman said.

Among these technologies are BESS (battery energy storage systems). BESS are energy storage systems that allow the energy produced to be stored and released when needed.
„CCE Italia and the entire CCE Group are at the forefront in developing photovoltaic projects and solutions such as BESS that make the national and European energy system increasingly renewable, flexible and independent“, Krauss underlined. (hcn)
