Longi: PV plant with 90% less CO2 emissions

The plan of building the production base in Yunnan’s Baoshan into the first almost zero-carbon plant of Longi was announced in October 2021, during phase I of the COP15 hosted in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Longi’s initiative is happening according to plan, and the company is proceeding with all work of the plant based on the four-step process.

For Longi, the Baoshan base is one of the most important bases upstream of the PV industry chain. To achieve zero-carbon carbon emissions within its operational horizon, the company has set three clear targets. First, 100% green electricity is used for the plant’s production and operation. As Yunnan abounds in green electricity resources, Longi locally utilizes high-proportioned renewable electricity to lower Scope 2 emissions. As a result, in 2022, green electricity used by the Baoshan base reached 99.09%.

Natural gas recovery – consumption reduction

Second, Longi is increasing investment in technological improvement in natural gas recovery to significantly reduce Scope 1 emissions. It is estimated that the carbon emission by the Baoshan base will drop from around 32,000 tons per year to 3,200 tons, down by over 90%. As the first natural gas recovery project implemented in the company, it greatly increases material utilization while reducing carbon emissions.

Longi is also building green plants, deploying digital energy management systems and continuously promoting energy conservation and consumption reduction, following the plan in place to enhance energy utilization efficiency. In 2021, the product unit consumption of the Baoshan base fell by over 8% on a year-on-year basis. As of now, Longi i has completed greenhouse gas accounting for its Baoshan base within Scope 1 and Scope 2 of its operations and has obtained a carbon verification certificate issued by a third-party organization. In addition, the Baoshan base has integrated green and low-carbon empowerment education for employees through the establishment of a “zero-carbon plant”. The aim of this effort is to cultivate employees’ pride in being a part of the green energy industry and fully engage them in the construction of this innovative facility.

Practice the zero-carbon commitment

In the future, Longi will continue its efforts to build the zero-carbon plant at the Baoshan base and pilot the construction of the zero-carbon plant in the downstream module manufacturing segment, the company announced. The construction of a zero-carbon plant will mark the beginning of Longi’s journey toward achieving zero-carbon emissions, the company stated. Additionally, it will serve as a testing ground for Longi’s “Solar for Solar” development model.
