The smarter E Europe 2022:

The smarter E Europe: Record attendance in Munich

This enormous number of visitors represents a 33 percent increase over the last regular event in 2019. The next The smarter E Europe will again be held at the Munich Exhibition Center from June 14-16, 2023. Pioneering and forward-looking solutions for sustainable and secure energy supply have never been as important as they are today. The climate protection targets as well as the massively increased prices of fossil fuels and the current geopolitical developments are rapidly accelerating the energy transition. The smarter E Europe presents the technologies, solutions and business models of the new energy world based entirely on renewable energies.

Green industry transition

"It's not just an energy transition, it's an industry transition," says Ditlev Engel, Chief Executive Officer, Energy Systems at global consultancy DNV. "The current political situation will accelerate the transition process. We urgently need to pick up the pace and invest in all parts of the value chain," Engel said. Photovoltaics (PV) has been successful for two decades, the storage industry has been on the rise for ten years, and charging infrastructure and electromobility are booming. The technologies, products and business models for the transformation of the energy and mobility world are in place. However, there are still too many regulatory barriers that inhibit the necessary momentum for expansion.

"The outlook for renewables, especially solar, is fantastic. We have the technologies we need, now we need to put in place new permitting and planning processes so we can scale much faster," Engel added. Aurelie Alemany, Chief Executive Officer of Senec GmbH, a subsidiary of energy supplier EnBW, added: "The shared responsibility for the energy transition is now broadly anchored in society. The enormous and still strongly increasing demand for PV, electricity storage and electromobility underlines this - solutions and technologies for this are available and were impressively presented in Munich."

The smarter E Europe is already showing where the path is headed in the future

From May 10 to 13, 2022, a total of four energy trade shows took place on the innovation platform of the new energy world: Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe, accompanied by four trade conferences and four exhibition forums. Europe's largest energy industry platform presented cross-industry and cross-sector products, solutions and business models of the new energy world and showed: everything is ready, now it is time to deploy the products and solutions and improve the political and regulatory framework to accelerate the energy and mobility transition.

During the expert conferences, the participants agreed that renewable energies are "security energies," and their expansion urgently needs to be accelerated. "In order to maintain independence of Europe in relation to other countries and continents, we must diversify the value chain for the production of solar modules and strengthen the development of a European PV industry," called for Matthias Taft, Chief Executive Officer at BayWa r.e. AG.

Integrated solution

Intelligent networking of sectors: an absolute prerequisite for success Solar power alone, however, does not make an energy turnaround; rather, it is about integrated solutions for a full supply of renewable energy. In this context, another key element is increasingly coming into focus alongside battery storage systems and was highlighted at the trade fairs and forums: Green hydrogen.

"If we want to achieve the climate targets of the Paris Agreement, we have to use all technologies. The energy transition is a combination of all areas of the energy system. We can't just rely on solar and wind energy, but must also include hydrogen and other technologies in the equation," Engel said.

Green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is becoming an important option for linking the electricity, heating and transport sectors more closely via renewable energies. As part of the innovation platform, the "Steel from Solar Energy" study on green hydrogen was presented. The study provides evidence that steel production from iron ore is possible with hydrogen produced from renewable energies. The steelmaking process is responsible for around four percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in Europe.

Simon Löffler, Chief Commercial Officer of Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH, emphasizes: "Storage is an important factor. We need to invest in networks. But the key is to use storage on a large scale. We also need to incentivize this to activate car batteries that are parked most of the time. So e-mobility is not just about charging vehicles, it's about building bridges to the entire energy infrastructure."

Focusing on the core topics of a future-proof energy and mobility industry

The four trade fairs, conferences and forums share a vision: a smart, sustainable and connected full supply of renewable energy around the clock, all year round. The focus is on renewable energies, decentralization and digitalization of the energy industry, as well as cross-industry solutions from the electricity, heat and transport sectors. Renewable energies and networked energy systems are closely linked to the goal of climate neutrality and the re-evaluation of supply security. The smarter E Europe gives a name to the new energy world and presents the solutions that are now urgently needed.

The smarter E Europe 2023, with its four individual trade shows (Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe), will be held at Messe München from June 14-16, 2023. (hcn)
