Sweden: New guide for emergency operation of residential PV

During the Swedish National Conference on Public Health and Defence, where crisis preparedness is a central theme, Svensk Solenergi launched a new five-step guide to help households secure their electricity supply in the event of a power outage.

With the help of solar panels, home batteries, and the right inverters, homeowners can prepare for standby operation – also known as island operation – and manage their energy supply during both minor grid disruptions and major crises. This offers peace of mind not only to individual households but also to entire neighbourhoods, as nearby residents can come over to charge their phones during power outages.

Five steps for emergy operation

The guide describes how households with solar panels can take the step to emergency operation:

1. The right type of inverter - check that it supports functions such as back up power or standalone mode.

2. installing a home battery - a battery connected to the solar panels allows you to store and use electricity around the clock.

3. Qualified installer - use a professional installer to ensure proper installation.

4. Adapting the house's electrical system - define which appliances will be powered in case of a power cut

5. Communication - Inform the grid owner and tell your neighbors that you have installed standby power.
