The smarter E: Renewable energy supply around the clock

The entire industry is therefore in a state of upheaval and is growing dynamically - also driven by the current situation. According to the International Energy Agency, or IEA for short, photovoltaics alone will replace natural gas and coal in 2027 as the largest electricity producers to date in three years. The smarter E Europe opens its doors today together with its four trade shows (Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe) and shows how a 24/7 renewable energy supply can succeed. More than 2,450 exhibitors will present their latest products and solutions for the new energy world at Europe's largest energy industry platform. More than 85,000 visitors from 160 countries are expected until Friday. Over three full days, The smarter E Europe offers the ideal opportunity to highlight the latest trends, technologies and business models while networking with visionaries and decision-makers in the industry.

The smarter E Europe opens its doors today and is all about renewable energy supply around the clock in 2023: more than 2,450 exhibitors will show their innovative products and solutions on 180,000 square meters in 17 exhibition halls (A1-A6, B0-B6, C1-C4) as well as in an outdoor area. Thus, The smarter E Europe offers enough space to exchange ideas on current trends, technologies and business models and to accelerate the implementation of a 24/7 renewable energy supply. "We need a flexibilized power system with a perpetual balance between distributed renewable power generation, controllable power plants, flexible loads including electrolysers and storage of different shapes and sizes. This can make it possible to establish a stable energy supply 24/7, achieve climate targets and at the same time drastically reduce dependence on energy imports," says Prof. Dr. Hans-Martin Henning, Institute Director at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy System (ISE).

Intersolar Europe 2023: Technologies and trends on a larger exhibition area

Photovoltaics (PV) will play a central role in this: For the first time in history, globally installed electrical PV capacity exceeded the milestone of one terawatt in 2022. As the world's leading trade show for the solar industry, Intersolar Europe reflects the positive development of the industry and has expanded its exhibition space to 111,500 square meters as a result. With an extensive supporting program, Intersolar Europe attracts an international trade audience. For example, experts will provide information about PV production highlights at the "PV Manufacturing Stage" (Hall A2, Booth A2.409). In addition, industry association SolarPower Europe will exclusively present the "Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2023-2027" at the Intersolar Europe Conference (June 13-14 at the International Congress Center Munich). "It shows that the European market is growing at a tremendous rate - even faster than many other regions worldwide. In it, we deal with the most thriving markets," says Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor at SolarPower Europe.

ees Europe 2023: More than 650 exhibitors showcase energy storage

A key to a secure and stable supply of renewable energy around the clock is battery storage, which can provide flexibility in the power grid. "In Germany, most of this flexibility is installed in more than 650,000 home storage systems, while more and more companies are installing commercial storage systems and large-scale battery storage systems are supporting our grids every second," says Jan Figgener, head of the Grid Integration and Storage Systems Technology department at RWTH Aachen University. The importance of the topic of energy storage is demonstrated by the development of ees Europe: Both in terms of its area and the number of exhibitors, the trade fair has more than doubled compared to the previous year. More than 650 exhibitors will present their products on more than 45,000 square meters in five exhibition halls and on the open-air site.

Power2Drive Europe 2023: New technologies for energy and mobility transition

With the energy and mobility turnaround, the range of products for electric mobility and charging infrastructure is growing. Power2Drive Europe provides a comprehensive overview. In the Power2Drive Forum (Hall B6 Booth B6.650), scientists and experts, manufacturers, dealers, start-ups and professional users will provide insights into current topics and new technologies. In addition, Power2Drive Europe is dedicated to the topic of "Vehicle to Home/Building" (V2H/V2B). "Electromobility is the central pillar for a successful transport turnaround and accordingly makes an important contribution to decarbonization. In Germany alone, more than one million electric vehicles were on the road in 2022. These already have 55 gigawatt hours of storage capacity, more than the entire German pumped storage power plants combined," says Dr. Ing. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Infineon Technologies AG and former CEO of Volkswagen AG.  "By having the vehicles stationary and connected to the grid, this can be ideally used to stabilize the power grid and make it more flexible. With the goal of 15 million e-vehicles on Germany's roads by 2030, this opens up an enormous storage potential of 825 gigawatt hours. Even if only part of the capacity is used to stabilize the grid, that's a big lever for the success of a new energy and mobility world."

In the Outdoor Area, companies will present charging solutions for fleets and smart solutions for combining low-cost power generation from renewable energy with sustainable mobility, such as solar canopies for parking lots. The range of test drives has also been expanded to enable visitors to experience electromobility directly.

EM-Power Europe 2023: For a holistic, renewable energy system

For a reliable supply of renewable energy around the clock, the power grid of the future must be digital, flexible and integrative. "Moving to a verifiable system that matches energy generation from CO2-free sources with consumption on an hourly basis can help accelerate grid decarbonization, reduce costs, increase the accuracy of emissions reporting, and promote system flexibility," says Bruce Douglas, Director Business & Communications at European industry association Eurelectric. The modernization of the power grid towards the smart grid, the integration of prosumers, e-mobility and power to heat into a holistic renewable energy system, and the efficient use of renewable resources around the clock are the focus of EM-Power Europe 2023, where 40 percent more exhibitors than last year will present products and solutions for the new energy world.

The smarter E Europe 2023: Integrated solutions for 24/7 renewable energy supply

Europe's largest energy industry platform The smarter E Europe will showcase solutions, products and business models - for 24/7 supply with renewable energy. "We offer the ideal platform to exchange ideas across industries and sectors. Because only together will we be able to realize a new sustainable energy and mobility world," says Markus Elsässer, Managing Director of Solar Promotion GmbH, which is organizing The smarter E Europe together with Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG (FWTM) is organizing. Hanna Böhme, Managing Director of FWTM, adds, "At our four energy trade fairs and at the conferences, players from the individual sectors can make new contacts, learn from each other and lay the foundation for joint projects."

The smarter E Europe and its four individual trade shows (Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe) takes place at Messe München from June 14-16, 2023. (hcn)
