Solar Investor’s Guide: Large storage systems

Storage systems to revolutionise the grid

Large storage systems are becoming increasingly popular in Europe. Key drivers include rising demand for grid stabilisation services and the need to shift peak loads. Italy, Great Britain and Germany are currently leading the way.

Solar markets remain volatile, but business around large-scale storage systems is booming. This is giving fresh momentum to the project segment, which is being constrained by grid operators across much of Europe. Advances in technology, availability and pricing now allow investors to develop entirely new business models.

Driven by digital electricity trading, AI and improved grid access, storage systems can generate significantly higher returns than stand-alone solar installations that only feed power into the grid. Solar storage and solar parks form a highly effective combination. Their flexibility and rapid response capabilities enable attractive returns, without reliance on state subsidies.
