Photovoltaic CIS panels have been installed on board of the newest transport ship of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line). K Line is one of the largest shipping companies in Japan.
The new freighter is the car carrier Drive Green Highway, which combines modern technologies for energy efficiency and an improved design in order to have as little environmental impact as possible. It is the first of eight sister ships to be built as part of K Line’s Drive Green Project.
By combining advantageous design and improved technology, the new transporter will emit 25 percent less carbon dioxide, 50 percent less nitrogen oxide and 90 percent less sulphur dioxide. The ship also increases its emissive efficiency based simply on its size: It is 200 metres long, 37.5 metres wide and can carry up to 7,500 cars.
More than 900 CIS panels from Solar Frontier panels with a combined output of 150 kilowatts were installed on the top deck, whose collected solar energy powers the LEDs on the car decks below. (HS)
