SolarPower Europe held its Solar Mobility Workshop in Brussels with high-level policymakers and business leaders from the solar and automotive industry to discuss the regulatory and industrial opportunities for solar-powered electric mobility.
Pascal Smet, Minister for Mobility and Public Works of the Brussels Capital Region said "Shared mobility such as shared electric vehicles is the future for sustainable cities. In Brussels we are making positive steps in this direction, which will increase our life quality and reduce harmful air pollution."
Use solar to power transport infrastructure
Dominique Ristori, Director General for Energy, European Commission said "Solar offers an unique opportunity for the decarbonisation of the transport fleet. Solar can directly power any infrastructure be it the car itself, car ports or charging stations. With the EU's Clean Energy Package, we are well equipped in terms of regulatory framework to promote a modern, sustainable and decarbonised mobility in Europe."
Contribute to the decarbonisation of the EU economy
Aurélie Beauvais, Policy Director of SolarPower Europe commented "Electro mobility is the key to Europe's transition to low-carbon transport, however, we must make sure that the electricity used for e-mobility is generated from renewable sources, and solar in particular. This way we can be sure that transport will contribute to the decarbonisation of the EU economy."
Solar powered cars will increase the technology deployment
Naomi Chevillard, Policy Advisor at SolarPower Europe said "Solar generates mobility. You can build charging infrastructure linked to solar on your home, your office, your car park, everywhere you could charge your car. Solar powered cars will also of course increase the deployment of our technology which will help us reach the EU climate and energy targets.''
The Solar Mobility Workshop was organised with the support from the BMW Brand Store and showcased successful business stories from companies leading the uptake of solar mobility in Europe and explored the regulatory and industrial opportunities for Europe. (HCN)
