The plant covers an area of 221 hectares in the southern industrial park of Debrecen and will supply both cells and modules to European car manufacturers. Debrecen is also in close proximity to several automotive plants of CATL customers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis and Volkswagen. However, the shareholders' meeting still has to approve the construction later this year.

To further reduce the carbon footprint of battery manufacturing, CATL will use electricity from renewable sources for production. In addition, with local partners in the country, the company intends to further push solar energy. To build a sustainable and circular value chain for batteries, the company is also exploring the possibility of joining hands with local partners to set up battery materials plants in Europe, CATL announced.
