Tesvolt equips large-scale storage facility with 65 megawatt hours

The local energy supplier EWR, the project developers W Power and Timbra will jointly operate the large-scale storage facility. Together they have founded the operating company Batteriespeicher-Park Worms (BPW). Tesvolt is supporting the project development. The storage manufacturer will supply and install the large-scale storage system and provide service and maintenance for the storage power plant. "With this project, we are making an important contribution to the flexibility and synchronisation of the electricity grid with the expansion of renewable energies. The more efficient and durable the battery storage systems are, the more profitable the operation of a storage power plant will ultimately be," says Andreas Wirth, Managing Director of W Power.

More profitability with lithium NCA cells

In order to achieve good profitability over the entire service life, the manufacturer from Wittenberg relies on battery cells from Samsung SDI. The lithium NCA cells have a higher energy density and above-average efficiency compared to conventional LFP cells. "NCA cells can utilise up to 100 per cent of the installed energy, which is often different in reality with other cell technologies," explains Philipp Schreiber, Technical Project Manager at Tesvolt.

The service life of the cells after full cycles is also longer, which pays off: "In energy trading, a higher depth of discharge can be utilised with NCA technology and the storage unit can generate revenue over a longer period of time due to the increased service life," explains Wirth. Tesvolt knows from experience how battery storage systems are burdened by trading services. The manufacturer therefore supports customers with the design and configuration. The technical marketability of the storage systems is also guaranteed thanks to close cooperation with established marketers.

Fire protection system certified to EU standard

In order for an investment in a large-scale storage project to be as profitable as possible, it is not only the quality of the storage solution that plays a role. Special attention should also be paid to the safety concept of the cells and the fire protection of the system during the planning phase. In Tesvolt's large storage system, an active fire protection system recognises overheating at cell level and stops it automatically by injecting fire extinguishing agent. The fire protection system is certified according to the European standard IEC-62933-5-1/2, which is unique in Europe. (nhp/mfo)
