BYD has been ranked as the top choice for renewable energy storage systems by end-users in Germany. With over 53%, BYD also had the highest brand awareness among survey participants that have installed a battery storage system in 2020. The evaluation reflects the success of the Battery-Box Premium line, which was launched in late 2019 and began sales in Germany in early 2020.
For the tenth consecutive year, market research organisation EUPD Research surveyed photovoltaic end-users in Germany on technologies and brand positioning. In the field of battery storage systems, the research focused on the purchasing process, expectations, and the solution application.
Most purchased brand
Among all survey participants who already had an energy storage system, 15% purchased a BYD Battery-Box system, with the closest competition following it at 13%, 11% and 9%. The lead becomes even more prominent in the ranking for battery storage systems installed between 2018 and 2020, as well purchases in 2020.
“BYD has been on a strong growth path over the last couple of years. This is particularly evident when you observe the high awareness level among German end-users who installed their battery storage system in 2020. Furthermore, BYD is also the most purchased brand, based on EUPD Research’s EndCustomer Monitor 10.0”, said Markus A.W. Hoehner, founder and CEO of EUPD Research Sustainable Management GmbH. “The survey amongst German PV owners and planners further reveals that BYD is among the top three storage brands which are most likely to be recommended by their customers.“
Growing interest
The survey results illustrate an overall trend in battery storage installations and consumer interests in purchasing a system. 42% of the respondents already own a battery storage or plan to install one. Of users who have not installed a battery storage but are interested in doing so, 80% are considering an installation for the future – 9% within the next 12 months, 19% within 12-24 months, and 39% within 2-5 years. 86% of the respondents owning a battery storage system state that the solutions provided by the battery storage system completely or largely meets their expectations.
Information sources and decisions
90% of the respondents consider the consumption of self-generated solar electricity as a highly important factor for their investment in a battery storage system. The most important factors when choosing a battery storage manufacturer were electricity supply in case of power failure, how established the manufacturer is, and how regularly the system would receive updates. 60% of end-users received information on battery storage systems from solar installers or pv specialists, 25% conducted research by themselves, 14% received information from electricians, and 5% received information from energy consultants.
“It is a great pleasure to see the high trust that the customers in the Germany have shown in our Battery-Box storage systems – especially in our latest Premium-series generation ”, said Julia Chen, Global Director BYD Battery-Box. “We know that German customers survey both the brand and the technical features very rigorously and therefore their vote of confidence is a great confirmation for us that we have been able to fulfil both the technical expectations and have gained their trust as a vendor. A warm thank you also goes to the very well-informed installers, consultants and market experts in the region who supported customers make informed decisions for their future energy solution choices.”
