In the first three quarters, 24,000 homeowners received a tax reduction ('green deduction') for installing a battery, compared to 14,000 in the whole of last year. In 2021, only 2,000 received the deduction for installing a battery.
"More people are buying solar batteries now than bought PV sytems in 2021," says Anna Werner, CEO of the Swedish Solar Energy Association (Svensk Solenergi).
There are many different uses for batteries. Today, domestic solar batteries are used, for example, to store electricity from your own solar cell system until the evening and to save and sell electricity when it is expensive, but also to help to maintain the frequency of the electricity grid.

„Batteries are the Swiss army knife of the electricity system. The more batteries that are installed and the smarter they can be controlled, the faster we can achieve the important electrification of society," says Anna Werner, CEO of Svensk Solenergi.
Large differences between counties
During the first three quarters of the year, tax deductions of SEK 758 million were made throughout the country, 68% more than in the whole of 2022 (SEK 453 million). Södermanland (south of Stockholm) is at the top of the counties with SEK 131 per inhabitant, while Norrbotten (northern Sweden) is at the bottom with SEK 7 per inhabitant. The national average is SEK 72 per inhabitant.

The government now needs to review the rules for the green deduction. It must be made clear that even batteries that deliver essential support services to the electricity grid are eligible for the green deduction as long as the battery also has the ability to store self-generated electricity, Svensk Solenergi demands.
