From 2025, LG Energy Solutions, one of the world's largest manufacturers of lithium batteries, will thus purchase climate-friendly lithium from Germany. LGES wants to make its batteries significantly greener in the future. To make this possible, the company signed a lithium hydroxide purchase agreement with Vulcan Energie Ressourcen. With this cooperation, both companies want to strengthen the independence and economic power of the European battery industry.
The agreement has an initial term of five years, which can be extended for another five years. Commercial delivery is scheduled to begin in 2025. LGES will take 5,000 tonnes of processed battery-grade lithium hydroxide in the first year, increasing to 10,000 tonnes per year from the second year of the contract.
LG to purchase around 40,000 tonnes per year
The start of the inspection is aligned with Vulcan's completion of the production facilities. The first pilot plant is already in operation in Rhineland-Palatinate. From 2025, a total of five plants will produce around 40,000 tonnes of LCE of the valuable metal annually. This will make it possible to realise an annual production volume of one million e-cars. "The decarbonisation of the automotive supply chain is one of the most important levers for the success of electromobility. It was important for us to be able to maintain short transport routes in order to keep our climate advantage high," comments Horst Kreuter, Managing Director of Vulcan. (nhp/mfo)
