ees Europe is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and the framework conditions for the dynamic development of storage markets are now very favorable in more and more countries. Florian Mayr, Committee Chair of the ees Europe Conference, puts it in a nutshell: “The industry is in the middle of the ‘energy storage decade’”.
The direction in which the storage industry can and will develop is the subject of exchange and discussion in the supporting program of Europe's largest and most international trade fair for batteries and energy storage systems. Florian Mayr explains: “As always, the ees Europe supporting program will cover the hottest and most interesting topics for the industry.” ees Europe is part of The smarter E Europe, Europe's largest trade fair alliance for the energy industry, and will take place from June 19 to 21, 2024 in Munich alongside Intersolar Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe
Rapidly growing demand for flexibility
Three fundamental factors are favoring the markets for energy storage worldwide: Firstly, the demand for flexibility in the grid is growing rapidly due to the increasing phase-out of fossil fuel power generation and the expansion of renewable energies. Secondly, the competitiveness of energy storage systems as a flexibility option is increasing, particularly due to falling battery costs and technological developments in hardware and software, but also due to growing volatility in electricity prices and therefore the price of flexibility.

And thirdly, and probably most importantly, more and more regulators and political decision-makers seem to have recognized the important role of energy storage. They are breaking down barriers and creating further opportunities for monetization. This dynamic is creating a positive mood in the industry and at the same time a great need for discussion and debate for all players in the growth market for energy storage.
ees Europe Conference: Key topics for the industry
The two-day ees Europe Conference will begin on June 18 at the International Congress Center Messe München (ICM). A key topic of the conference will be the regulatory framework at European level: The EU electricity market reform and its concrete implementation will result in a high potential for energy storage systems. Another important topic is the EU Battery Regulation with its focus on sustainability aspects for energy storage systems. There will be high-caliber panels on both topics.
At the same time, many are once again proclaiming the beginning of the era of long-term storage. But is this era really dawning this time? And what will it take? There will be a sober and certainly controversial discussion here. Another key topic will be security of supply along the supply chain and the right strategies for the players in this area. And of course the revenue side must not be neglected - how can the use of energy storage systems be optimized in order to maximize returns?
Knowledge hub for the industry and focus topic: green hydrogen
Two of the seven specialist forums of The smarter E Europe will take place in the halls of ees Europe over the three days of the trade fair, providing visitors with top-class input and the opportunity to exchange views: The ees Forum in Hall C2 will serve as a knowledge hub for the industry. Participants will have the opportunity to keep up to date with the latest trends and technological advances in the field of battery and energy storage. “
Highlights include sessions such as ‘Energy Storage Market Trends’ with detailed insights from EUPD Research, BSW (German Solar Industry Association) and a panel discussion with industry leaders such as E3/DC, sonnen, RCT Power, Varta and Sigenergy,” says Eva Benz from IBESA. In addition, the presentations on “Battery diagnostics” and “Battery Safety” by the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University and the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) promise valuable insights. The ees Forum will also provide practical tips for commercial storage systems and the smart installation of home storage systems.

The Green Hydrogen Forum in Hall B2 is dedicated to the trend topic of green hydrogen. The spectrum of topics ranges from solar projects that are combined with electrolysers and hydrogen storage systems, the development of international hydrogen markets and the necessary infrastructure, to fuel cell applications and the hydrogen core network in Germany:
“At the Green Hydrogen Forum, the hydrogen industry will find the ideal B2B exchange with the renewable energy sector,” explains Olivier Bucheli, Managing Director of EFCF and content partner for the top-class three-day program. Other partners are DWV and Hydrogen Moves.
