One shortcoming is that many lead batteries do not allow the monitoring of individual cells. This makes it hard to recognise when a lead cell is in decline. The lead plates may also deteriorate. This results in sludge accumulating at the bottom of the standing cells: Their performance decreases rapidly. (HS)
