Ads-Tec, the supplier of battery-supported rapid charging systems and large-scale storage systems, has realised a showcase project in Sweden. The company has installed eight containers full of storage technology and matching inverters for the Swedish infrastructure developer Polar Structur in Hanige near Stockholm.
Platform solution for grid services
The new storage unit has an output of 20 megawatts, making it the largest battery power plant in Sweden to date, according to the project partners. The plant can do more than just store electricity. It is an intelligent platform solution developed by Ads-Tec Energy. It also enables Polar Structure to offer grid-supporting services. In the event of grid fluctuations, the battery storage system is used to stabilise the grid - to store and supply green electricity.
Filling power gaps
This will also be the main task of the storage power plant. The plant will be operated by Polar Capacity, a subsidiary of Polar Strucutre, together with Stockholm Exergi to fill electricity gaps in the greater Stockholm area that may arise due to the increasing share of renewables in the grid.

At the same time, it will absorb profits from volatile power plants and store them temporarily until they are needed. The storage unit that has now been built is only part of a 100-megawatt portfolio that the two Swedish companies will build to ensure a stable electricity supply in Stockholm. The plan is to distribute this total output across various locations.
Responsibility for the entire energy system
For Stockholm Exergi, the construction of the storage facilities is an important step towards expanding its existing business models such as heat, cooling and electricity supply and production, emphasises Anders Egelrud, Managing Director of Stockholm Exergi. The company is thus assuming greater responsibility for the entire and currently changing energy system.
Advancing projects together
This is also Polar Structure's motivation for investing in the storage power plants. After all, the company is investing in the long-term in the transition of transport and energy as well as in digitalisation. "No one part of this has all the answers on its own and strategic partnerships with other companies in the industry are crucial pieces of the puzzle when it comes to successfully shaping the energy transition," explains Tobias Emanuelsson, Managing Director of Polar Structure. For this reason, joint projects such as the construction of the storage facilities are of central importance in order to create stability, security and reliability for the Stockholm electricity system.
