New buildings for offices, logistics and storage areas are to be completed there in the next few months. BayWa r.e. is investing around 20 million euros in a particularly sustainable plus-energy construction method. Once completed by a regional contractor, the warehouse and office capacities at the site will increase significantly.
"Due to our strong growth in recent years - the number of employees in Tübingen has doubled in the last 24 months alone - we have had to rent office and warehouse space in Tübingen and the surrounding area. We are looking forward to soon being able to bring the majority of our employees together in one central location thanks to the modern and sustainable new building. This will allow us to optimally support the energy transition," explains Alexander Schütt, Managing Director of BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH.
Strong local support for sustainability
Günter Haug, COO of BayWa r.e. AG, and former long-time managing director of BayWa r.e.'s solar trading division, adds, "When I joined what was then MHH in 1996, the team consisted of five men and women and a 100 m² warehouse. I always find it remarkable that the pioneering spirit and motivation that excited me so much back then are still present today and can be felt quite clearly among my colleagues. To see how far we have come together and where we are today, as one of the leading photovoltaic wholesalers worldwide, does make me very proud."

"Climate protection and sustainability are writ large in Tübingen. All the people in the region, the city administration and council, many institutions, local businesses and citizens have been working hard for this for years with great success," said Tübingen's Lord Mayor Boris Palmer at the topping-out ceremony. "That's why it's fantastic that BayWa r.e. AG is setting an example here in Tübingen with its new building, showing that modern real estate can already meet ambitious environmental and climate targets without having to make any compromises in terms of comfort or functionality."
Topping-out ceremony for large new building
The headquarters of BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH in Tübingen is home not only to offices, but also to one of two central warehouses in Germany with approximately 20,000 square meters of storage space to date. Now, a further 11,000 square meters of logistics space and warehouses for photovoltaic system components will be built.
By summer 2023, a state-of-the-art office building with a floor area of 2,700 square meters will then be completed using sustainable construction methods. The future buildings are designed as plus-energy buildings, i.e. they produce more energy than they consume. Building materials such as wood and glass will dominate the design of the buildings.
Largest PV system in Tübingen
In addition to the 515 kWp photovoltaic system already installed on the existing building with an annual electricity production of 500,000 kWh, further solar modules with a total output of 1.2 MWp will be installed on the roofs of the new buildings and building-integrated on three facades, generating around 1.2 million kWh of electricity per year. BayWa r.e. Solar Energy Systems GmbH will thus operate the largest rooftop PV system in Tübingen, impressively underscoring its ambitions as a successful company in the renewable energy market for everyone in the region to see.
Sector coupling and complete renunciation of fossil energy in new buildings
The new buildings will produce almost twice as much electricity as will be consumed there. In addition to electricity, this is also used to supply heat and air conditioning to the buildings through heating and cooling ceilings. In addition, the operation of industrial trucks in the warehouses and the supply of over 50 wallboxes for charging electric cars and e-bikes is also ensured. A modern solar storage system with a capacity of 1 MWh supports the overall concept, which puts sector coupling into practice. The use of fossil energy can be completely dispensed with. (hcn)
