The heat pump manufacturer Ait (Alpha Innotec) has formed a team of specialists to develop sustainable supply concepts for urban districts and other large-scale projects. They support planners on site to create energy-efficient solutions. Because one thing is clear: the more heat pumps are installed and the better they are integrated into an overall system, the faster the heat transition progresses.

Lagarde Bamberg is one of the outstanding projects. It is one of the largest inner-city construction projects in Germany and a prime example of a holistic energy concept. Ait's experts are working closely with Stefan Loskarn on the implementation. He is head of the neighbourhood development department at the Bamberg municipal utility.

An eye for detail
Anyone who talks to him quickly realises that the man not only has an eye for the big picture, he obviously also knows every detail. Above all, Stefan Loskarn is passionate about his project.
The Lagarde site covers around 20 hectares. From 1945 to 2014, it was used by the US Army as barracks. The withdrawal of the military opened up new possibilities for the planners of the former garrison town. A new residential area is now being built in the middle of the city - with green spaces, businesses and room for cultural activities.
Generating and using energy on site
The project is ambitious: Because the planners are relying on an energy supply that uses as many renewable energy sources as possible on site. "To achieve this, we have developed very precisely balanced energy, heat and mobility concepts," says Stefan Loskarn.

The result speaks for itself: the municipal utilities generate around 70 per cent of the energy they need in the middle of the city from renewable resources - mainly with photovoltaic systems and geothermal energy. With this, the Bambergers are setting standards. For in addition to the new buildings - residential houses, office complexes and commercial premises - existing buildings, most of them listed, also have to be supplied. No easy undertaking.
