Netherlands: CCE builds PV plant on former landfill site

The international independant power producer CCE Holding is using a former landfill site in Rafelder for the construction of a solar system. Over the next few months, the PV plant with a nominal capacity of 10.2 MW will be built on an area of around 6.2 hectares, which will supply around 2500 residents with green electricity.

Double effect for the environment

CCE Holding is using an area that can neither be used as agricultural nor as building land due to its previous use as a landfill site. The contaminated brownfield site requires extensive treatment due to the polluted soil and groundwater.

CCE is investing a mid-five-figure in various measures before the actual construction of the plant begins: The solar PV Park will be installed on top of clean sand and a layer of geotextile, effectively sealing the contaminated soil for the coming decades.

Cederik Engel, Managing Director CCE The Netherlands and CCE’s Head of Sustainability, emphasizes that maximum sustainability is implemented in this project: “With this PV plant, CCE has not only focused on electricity production, we also applied all possible ESG guidelines during planning and construction. This truly brings our slogan ‘We are realizing the future’ to life.“ (hcn)
