The storage company Fenecon has received a grant of 4.5 million euros from the EU Innovation Fund. The medium-sized company wants to invest the money in the construction of a new production site according to automotive standards in Iggensbach near Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria, the company announced. From 2023 onwards, container storage systems will be manufactured there from spare part batteries and those that have already been used in vehicles.
With the storage systems of the Fenecon Industrial series produced at the plant, the manufacturer plans to save 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 over the next ten years and thus make a significant contribution to climate protection and the energy transition. The EU Innovation Fund supports clean technology projects that contribute to climate neutrality by 2050.
Using batteries from Europe that are available
To be eligible for funding, projects must reduce greenhouse gas emissions, use innovative technologies, and be quick to implement, scalable and cost-effective. "We are using batteries that are already available in Europe," says Franz-Josef Feilmeier, founder and CEO of Fenecon, adding, "We are underlining our approach to sustainability with the new production, because the raw materials that have already been used can work usefully for many more years and save CO2 before we put them into recycling in a controlled way."

The next steps: Production and storage halls, development laboratories and offices are being built on a site located at the Iggensbach motorway exit. All vehicles are electric and all parking spaces are equipped with charging stations. The company uses suitable roof and façade surfaces for solar power. Industrial production is scheduled to start in 2023 and grow along with the increasing availability of used vehicle batteries, ultimately creating over 90 jobs, a third of which are engineering positions.
