The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced a tender for 64 mosques initially. The goal is a 40-percent reduction in energy costs at 15,000 mosques around the country that consume an average of 90 kilowatts a day, to raise public awareness and to create local jobs. Studies have shown that energy consumption can be cut by 60 percent.
Coming UN climate negotiations in Marrakesh
From November 7-18, 2016 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) will take place in Marrakesh. During COP 22, parties will, inter alia, begin preparations for entry into force of the Paris Agreement.
Programme supported by GIZ
The programme entitled Energy Efficiency in mosques was already starteted in 2014 and runs until 2019. It is planned by Germany’s Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GIZ also helps to implement the programme and provides technical advice on equipping existing mosques with energy-efficient technologies and renewable energies, including the certification of these technologies.
Foster local companies
“A key objective of the project is to support partners in designing training measures that are tailored to the needs of Moroccan companies. This should enable local companies to win public-sector installation and maintenance contracts and to sell their products and services”, Jan-Christoph Kuntze from GIZ said.
Return of investment based on energy savings
The return of the investment made will be based on the energy savings achieved. "It is based on the idea that Moroccan companies involved in these mosques will be repaid through savings made by the building manager," Kuntze adds. (HCN)
