Spain: 95 MW solar park sold

With a capacity of 95 MW and an annual electricity production of 187 GWh, Almodóvar will make an important contribution to the Spanish energy transition.

Following the sale of the 109 MW Lirios solar park a few months ago, this marks another milestone in the long-standing partnership between BayWa r.e. and Encavis AG with numerous successfully implemented solar and wind projects across Europe.

Almodóvar is part of a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) that BayWa r.e. signed in 2021 with Huhtamaki, one of the leading providers of sustainable packaging solutions based in Finland. The contract covers the electricity from two Spanish solar parks and covers around 80% of Huhtamaki's electricity needs in Europe. This was the largest European VPPA in the packaging industry and the first of its kind for a Finnish company.

Measures to improve biodiversity

One focus of BayWa r.e. during the construction and operation of the park is to improve biodiversity on site. To this end, the company will implement the following measures:
Creation of two bodies of water for invertebrates and amphibians, construction of nesting boxes and shelters for small mammals, insects and bats, cultivation of legumes and cereals as a habitat for steppe birds on 82 hectares near the project site,

Matthias Taft, CEO of BayWa r.e. AG, comments: "We are pleased to announce the sale of another solar park realized by our team in Spain. Almodóvar is one of many project sales we will be closing in Europe in the coming months. The energy transition continues to gather pace and we will continue to drive forward the expansion of renewable energies with new wind, solar and battery storage projects.“

More than 600 MW solar and wind projects realized in Spain

Juanjo Álvarez, Managing Director, BayWa r.e. Projects Spain, added: "We have been active in the Spanish market for over ten years and have so far realized more than 600 MW of wind and solar projects there. Spain is one of the core markets for BayWa r.e. and we will continue to play a leading role in the implementation of the energy transition in Spain and beyond." (hcn)
