Siemens Smart Infrastructure and storage manufacturers Fluence have handed over the storage system on the Azores island of Terceira to Portuguese energy provider EDA (Electricidade dos Açores). With the intelligent combination of software for the projection of energy consumption and production and a battery storage system with 15 megawatts of output, more electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind or photovoltaics can now be reliably integrated into the power grid. This will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 3,600 tonnes per year in the future.
Integration of green electricity into the power grid
The project on the Azores shows how the steady expansion of renewables and their integration into the power grid can be achieved while at the same time reducing dependence on fossil fuels. "Know-how in combining software and hardware plays a central role in the energy transition," says Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO Grid Software at Siemens. Fluence's system will also provide reactive power and is black-start capable to start the supply independently of the power grid.
Mix of wind, hydropower and geothermal energy
The Azores consists of nine isolated autonomous energy systems with high potential for renewable energy, mainly wind, hydropower and geothermal sources. The challenge was to enable a balance between energy production and consumption, even with highly fluctuating feed-in and demand. The goal is a more secure power supply for the population with a steadily increasing share of renewables in the electricity mix to up to 50 per cent. (nhp/mfo)
